2008年5月2日，旅英艺术家郝亚冬赴甘肃省石节子村，作了与村民互动的作品《我不是童话》。作品的经过是石节子全村的村民，包括男女老幼，都亲自在郝亚冬的白色裙子上写下了自己的名字和出生年月日。村子里很多不识字，从未动过笔的人也有生以来第一次在这件衣服上写下了自己的名字。实在没法写字的人，如只有四岁的小女孩孙慧慧，由别人写上她的名字，由她本人在旁边画圈作标记。

郝亚冬的作品思路缘起于艾未未在卡塞尔文献展上的作品《童话》，石节子有四位村民靳女女、李保元、靳茂林、孙保林参与了1001位中国人免费赴德参观展览的计划。艺术家认为，在艾未未的《童话》里，中国人是以集体的、1001这样一个整体数目的群体面目出现在德国，出现在卡塞尔，她计划把这件写有石节子村民名字和出生年月的衣服送往德国卡塞尔，期望他们能在德国以个人的、独立的方式再次引起注目。正如作品名称“我不是童话”一样所示，她的作品与艾的作品“童话”遥遥相对。郝亚冬本人认为这件作品除了签名的衣服以外，她与村民，尤其是村子里孩子们的交流显得尤为重要，她认为给孩子们讲解艺术作品会给他们的成长起到积极的作用。

2007:  I and Thou (Live art) Vital 07 International Live Art Festival, Manchester
 Taking Martin Buber’s thoughts in his book I and Thou as a starting point, the intention of this piece is to provide a situation for participants to encounter with the spiritual self; Thou. The work was a sequence of one to one encounters in a lift. The audience was asked to operate the lift, and to send it downwards, then stop it when it was halfway between two floors.The focus of each encounter between myself and a member of the public was a discussion about guilt, forgiveness and punishment. A response to the discussion was then written by the participant on my face. This process was repeated with each participant, with my face gradually becoming covered by writing consisting of ‘it matters’ and ‘it doesn’t matter’.

 2007：The Gathering （Performance）, Manchester International Festival, Manchester, (in collaboration with Michael Mayhew and other collaborators)

 In this 1 day long Live Art /performance piece, I am the performer who ‘walks the deserts of China ’. The work consisted of 6 hours interview with audiences to collect stories of a vanished person in their lives and 2 hours performance regarding the vanished’ in contexts of both stories collected through interviews and the issues caused by the rapidly social and economic changes in China. 

 2007. Spin Cycle (Installation / Live Art), BonkersFest! 2007, South London Gallery, London(In collaboration with Rakshanda Khan)

 Spin Cycle was a one-day interactive Live Art/installation at a launderette in Camberwell Green. Me and my collaborator performed a repetitive ritual of drawing stories on our bodies and then washing them away. This repeated action refers to the phrase “to wash one’s hands of”, in Spin Cycle this was a metaphor for a struggle with an obsessive form of self-expression. Images of us washing hands with participants were taken by a Polaroid camera at the site and the painful memories written on bright cloths by both ourselves and participants were put into washing machines to represent hope through the process of washing away all the painful experiences as a process of self-purification.

 2007. Trivialities (Live Art),  Rules and Regs Live Art Event , Artist in Residency, South Hill Park Arts Centre , Bracknell

 This work consisted of two distinct but related actions. The first part was a series of one to one text based conversations which appropriated the form of a ‘confession’, in which the conversation is held with an unknown other.  The conversations used individual memories to explore personal suffering. The second part of the project was a public sublimation of the material generated during the conversations.

 2006. Brief Encounter (Live Art), Vital International Live Art Festival, Manchester

 Vital involved14 renowned artists of Chinese descent from across the world including Marcus Young, He Yunchang, Mad for Real, Patty Chang and He Chengyao etc. As one of the invited artists, my work Brief Encounter was an interactive piece which invited an audience member to wash hands with me in a basin filled with water, fixed to the bottom of this basin was a personal photograph. This work utilised the Film ‘brief encounter’ as a motif in which to develop a visible and tangible process or ritual-like activity between the artist and participants. This ritual examined the idea of infinite moments, both remembered and forgotten, in our lives. The work was featured by the national press and I was interviewed by BBC Radio 4.

 2006. The Unbearable Lightness of Text Messages (Interactive

installation),Artist Residency, Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester

 This installation focused on the use of text messages to highlight individual memories in this digital age. The temporality of individual memory has led to the waning of subjectivities and the installation referenced Milan Kundera’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”. In this work I suggest that life is unbearably light when it has no memories and traces in it, yet the act of writing could be a temporary remedy for the malady of our time, which is amnesia. This interactive installation provided a metaphor for those neglected memories and enabled people to reflect upon the temporal. The work was completed through the process of audiences’ participation. Audiences were invited to write down text messages from their mobile phones on a piece of paper, which, in Chinese superstition, is believed to be the money for the dead to spend through burning. The 300 text messages left by audiences over a period of 3 weeks were gathered together to build a large scale installation.

 2004.The Archive Project(Live art /Interactive installation) , Lanzhou, China

 The focus of this work was the paper folders used by the government to store personal information. During my Live Art performance the audience was invited to use these folders to make their own archives with material from their own personal belongings, which included tampons, love letters, chequebooks and sweat. This performance and interactive installation explored my concerns about the tensions between “power and docile bodies” and how an individual memory functions as a history of ordinary people and as an intervention that disrupts dominant narratives.
