At the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar. The government just ended a ban on gatherings of more than five people in the city less than a month after the military junta crushed an uprising for democracy led by the nation's revered monks.

Now, an ominous calm has settled over the country. People have quietly returned to the squalor and inflation that brought them to the streets in protest. 学习中国?

But beneath the surface, anger, uncertainty, hopelessness — and above all, fear of the junta — prevail.

The nation's economic woes, which spurred the protests, have not abated.

Not even the most basic aspects of life have been spared rising prices. A bowl of low-grade rice, enough to feed a family of four for a day, cost 16 kyats in 1988. It now costs 800 kyats. A 30-minute bus ride cost 100 kyats a couple months ago, but the fare has doubled. 基本生活所需也很匮乏。

Even schools have suffered as a consequence of economic hardship. At this private school, the principal provides free tuition for a number of students who could not otherwise afford an education.

Pagan was the capital of several ancient kingdoms, rivaling Angkor in Cambodia as the pre-eminent religious city in Southeast Asia. In recent years, the government of Myanmar, to the horror of foreign experts, has constructed new pagodas on old sites in Bagan, and has haphazardly restored old ones.
